The Washington Capitals felt they gave away two goals. Alex Ovechkin got them right back when it mattered most.

Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading 26th goal 1:57 into overtime and the Capitals beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-4 on Tuesday night for their third straight win.

Making his first start since a 7-5 home loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Dec. 19, Nilsson gave up a bad goal just 56 seconds into the game. Lindholm fired a clearing attempt from his own blue line that Nilsson steered into the path of a hard-charging Henrique, who swooped into the corner and fired a shot from below the goal-line that somehow caromed off the goalie’s stick and in for his ninth of the season.

You’d like to make every save out there, said Nilsson, who saw his save percentage dip to .900. First one was definitely on me, that’s something I would like to have back.

I wasn’t able to make that extra save.

Seahawks’ Russell Wilson was on liquid diet for days after Karlos Dansby hit

A doctor told Russell Wilson he was lucky to escape without a broken jaw after a hit to the head by Karlos Dansby in Week 10, but the Seahawks quarterback still felt the impact’s effect for days.

Wilson told reporters Friday that he couldn’t eat solid food for about three days after the Nov. 9 win in Arizona and had to subsist on smoothies through the weekend after the Thursday night game. In addition to the liquid diet, he had to wear what amounted to a splint for a little while to “reset” his jaw.

“The league’s gotta do what they’ve gotta do and obviously it’s really important for player safety and everything, but I was completely fine — just my jaw got busted up pretty good,” Wilson said. “We’re cooperating, doing everything we can to make sure that we do it the right way, that’s how we always try to do it.”

Dansby was fined $18,231 for the hit, according to multiple reports Friday.

“We all see how impactful a commissioner’s decision can be in many areas. We’ve given him a lot of power. I think we need the checks and balances of ownership having to actually be in a position to not just suggest but approve of his decisions. So that’s what this is about.”

Goodell’s contract is set to expire at the end of 2018, but if the proposed contract extension gets approved, Goodell would be commissioner through 2024. Jones reiterated that he wants the compensation committee to not only negotiate the extension, but to also have it approved unanimously by the owners. broncos_088-500x500

Brees leads Saints past Bears, 20-12, for 5th straight win

Drew Brees completed 23 of 28 passes for 299 yards against a Bears defense that ranked sixth against the pass, and the New Orleans Saints beat Chicago 20-12 Sunday for their fifth straight win.

Chicago had a TD overturned on video review after Zach Miller’s 25-yard catch, during which the tight end’s left leg bent unnaturally as he landed. As Miller was carted off the field with an apparently serious knee injury, officials ruled that replayed showed the ground caused the ball to loosen in Miller’s grasp as his upper body crashed to the turf — after his knee had given out.

For the Bears, in addition to Miller’s knee injury, Chicago right guard Kyle Long left the game with a hand injury. Cornerback Prince Amukamara had an apparent lower body injury in the second quarter but was able to walk to the sideline on his own and returned.

The fun mock trade that just about everybody has done is sending Eli Manning from the Giants to the Jaguars because of the convenient Tom Coughlin factor in Jacksonville. But wouldn’t the Jaguars want a veteran upgrade from Blake Bortles and not the same type of passer at this point? Sorry, Eli.

I’m a great teammate. I don’t have beef with nobody in here, Bryant said. [I] love everybody in here. I work hard with everybody. I feel bad about the distractions but at the same time what’s done is done. Can’t take it back. All I can do is move on from it.

Instead, the hot-and-cold Raiders find themselves 3-5 at the midway point, a club with issues on both sides of the ball — problems that festered again in Sunday’s 34-14 collapse to the frisky Bills.

Despite the sketchy results, quarterback Derek Carr refuses to see the Raiders as a fading entity, promising after the loss to get Oakland back on track.blues-020

NFL’s unsolved mysteries through Week 8: Why doesn’t Bill O’Brien trust Deshaun Watson?

Wentz has taken the NFL by storm in his second year, carrying the Eagles to a league-best seven wins while the team that didn’t think he’d ever be a top-20 QB is still winless.

After sinking his first two free throws of the game, Curry extended his streak to a career-high 54, including two makes from last season. In the third quarter, he missed his first free throw of the season.

Bradley led the Pistons (5-2) with 23 points and three steals. Reggie Jackson chipped in 22 points and five assists.

The Warriors hit the road for the second half of this back-to-back to face the LA Clippers on Monday night.

“As a member of this team, there are standards and we have responsibilities and obligations,” coach Ben McAdoo said in a statement. “When we don’t fulfill those obligations, there are consequences. As I have said before, we do not like to handle our team discipline publicly. There are times when it is unavoidable, and this is one of those times.”

The team will review Jenkins status at the beginning of next week.

The suspension continues a turbulent season for McAdoo both on and off the field.

Jenkins’ punishment comes less than three weeks after the team suspended Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie for violation of team rules. DRC’s suspension was announced as “indefinite” at the time, but he missed only one game.

The 1-6 Giants will host the Rams the 5-2 Rams at MetLife Sunday afternoon without their top cornerback. The news is a boon for Jared Goff and Sammy Watkins heading to the east coast.

Vikings vs. Browns: Score, results, highlights from Week 8 game in London

Sunday’s Week 8 game in London, the last of four games scheduled to be played across the pond in the NFL International Series this season, was not exactly a must-see sporting event for fans in England. Vikings vs. Browns, regardless of where it would be played, was low on the intrigue meter compared to other NFL games Sunday.

JuJu Smith-Schuster doesn’t need a bike … when he’s got fast wheels like he displayed on a 97-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter. The longest pass play in Steelers history and tied for the longest play from scrimmage in franchise history came just three plays after the Lions opted to go for it on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard-line but were stuffed on a quarterback run.

If the favored Kansas City Chiefs beat the Denver Broncos tonight on Monday Night Football, favorites will be 12-1 on the week. The last time favorites were that successful straight-up was Week 11 of 2012, when the chalk won 13 of 14 games, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

The only underdog to pull an outright upset Sunday was the Carolina Panthers, and they were only 1-point underdogs at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Panthers won 17-3.

Favorites won every other game, leaving multiple Las Vegas sportsbooks in the red. But it could have been worse for the books. While favorites went 10-1 straight-up, they finished only 6-5 against the closing spread at the Westgate SuperBook.

Overall, though, Sunday went to the betting public, which was rewarded for siding with some of the day’s biggest favorites.

“In general, we got beaten up on the money-line favorites and the teasers, with all the favorites winning,” Jason Simbal, vice president of risk for sportsbook operator CG Technology, told ESPN.

Maurice Jones-Drew is giving Tony Romo a run for his money in NFL predictions

Tony Romo is getting credit for being an incredible broadcaster with his predictions, but Maurice Jones-Drew is sneaking in with some truly impressive ones of his own. His latest was a terrifyingly accurate take on Jaguars-Steelers that has us reeling.

“The Jaguars’ defense forces the Pittsburgh Steelers into four turnovers. As a result, Blake Bortles will outplay Ben Roethlisberger, who usually does well at home.”
Checking in on the game now and …. oh my god.

Gronkowski played the entire game against the Carolina Panthers in Week 4 and seemed fine. However, the four-time Pro Bowler surprisingly appeared on the Patriots’ injury report on Wednesday and was listed as questionable heading into Week 5. Gronkowski met with the media on Tuesday, and he didn’t appear to be in any pain.

ESPN reported that Gronkowski arrived at the Raymond James Stadium sporting a sleeve around his left thigh on Thursday. The Patriots will have to compete for their third win of the season without their star tight end.

Other than Tom Brady, Gronkowski is the best player on the Patriots. He creates matchup problems for opposing defenses. He can play in the slot, line up on the perimeter to run routes, and deliver blocks to spring running backs open.

Gronkowski has hauled in 20 passes for 318 yards and two touchdowns this season. He also leads the Patriots in receiving yards. Now, New England will have to depend on Dwayne Allen to make plays while Gronkowski nurses his left thigh injury.falcons_030

This Sunday was right there with it.

“It’s a great deal for Teddy, and we’ll take it one day at a time, just like we did for the past 14 months,” Zimmer said.

Bridgewater missed the entire 2016 season due to a torn ACL and dislocated knee. The Vikings placed him on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list before the 2017 regular season and are expected to take him off soon, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

However, Zimmer said the Vikings won’t activate him from the PUP just yet. The Vikings have 21 days to decide whether to put him on the active roster. If they don’t, he’ll spend the rest of the season on injured reserve.

The Minnesota Vikings’ upset of the Green Bay Packers produced the biggest win of the morning slate for the books, and the Pittsburgh Steelers sealed a winning day for the casinos by handing the favored Kansas City Chiefs their first loss of the season.

“The Packers and Chiefs losing, those two games dwarfed everything else,” Ed Salmons, assistant manager at the Westgate, said late Sunday afternoon. “Saints-Lions was the only one we lost.”

Just three weeks ago, underdogs also went on a hot streak, covering the spread in 10 of 13 games on Sept. 24 and leading the books to what some said was their best Sunday ever.

This Sunday was right there with it.

“Second-best Sunday of the season,” Michael Grodsky, vice president of marketing for William Hill’s Nevada sportsbook, told ESPN. “Week 3 was just historic for us.”

His addition alone has elevated the performance of the offensive line which is single-handedly allowing McVay’s concepts to be implements and allowing QB Jared Goff to do what he has done this season: go through reads, make good decisions and work all areas of the field to a wide diversity of targets.falcons_021

Biggest NFL injuries of Week 5

J.J. Watt, DE, Houston Texans: Watt suffered a left leg injury while trying to make a play on Alex Smith during the first quarter of Sunday night’s game against the Chiefs, and remained on the ground while he was examined by Texans medical personnel. Eventually, Watt rose and made his way slowly to the sideline while attempting to keep weight off that leg. He then was carted off to the locker room for further evaluation. The team quickly announced that Watt was out for the remainder of the game, and he left the stadium in an ambulance. Later during the game, the Texans announced that Watt had sustained a tibial plateau fracture in his left leg, and he’ll be out indefinitely.

Adam Jones, CB, Cincinnati Bengals: A lower-back injury plagued Jones throughout the first half of Sunday’s game, and eventually he departed for the locker room with Bengals training staff. He was originally deemed questionable to return before being downgraded to out.

The Browns squandered four scoring opportunities during a sometimes comical — and difficult to watch — first half in which they dominated statistically, but couldn’t get out of their own way.

Crowell fumbled a pitch inside New York’s 10, Gonzalez missed two field goals and Kizer threw an interception at the goal line.

Jets: RB Bilal Powell exited in the second quarter with a calf injury, forcing third-stringer Elijah McGuire into action. Starter Matt Forte was inactive for the second straight week with turf toe.

Browns: LB James Burgess sustained a left knee injury in the fourth and walked off. … Starting LB Jamie Collins missed his third straight game with a concussion.

The NFL has appealed Judge Mazzant’s ruling to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals.

The NFL has also filed a motion in Mazzant’s federal court in Texas to change the jurisdiction to a New York City federal court that has historically leaned toward the league’s perspective.

The appeals process and the federal lawsuit aren’t trying to establish guilt or innocence. Carolina Panthers was never charged with a crime. These processes simply seek to establish whether or not the NFL acted in a manner that is consistent with its personal conduct policy. Mazzant doesn’t believe it did.

“The NFL’s actions demonstrate that from the very beginning of the decision-making process, a cloud of fundamental unfairness followed Elliott,” Mazzant wrote in his decision. “Unfortunately, this cloud followed Elliott into the arbitration proceedings.”

It’s difficult to project how the appeals court will rule, but the NFL will file an emergency stay with the appeals court if Mazzant declines the appeal or does not deliver a rule by Thursday.

The league is seeking a quick decision for a process that often takes months:

Elliott’s legal team issued a response shortly thereafter, via NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

“The NFL’s latest maneuvering appears to be indicative of a league with an agenda: trying to navigate a public relations crisis rather than focus on fairness and fact finding,” the statement read.

What happened? Elliott was handed the suspension following an investigation into domestic violence allegations made against him in July 2016. The investigation lasted more than a year, and Elliott immediately appealed the disciplinary ruling.
